Green Delaware letter to AMTRAK on CSO Clean Up Green Delaware

Dear Mr. Warrington: AMTRAK has an extensive presence in Wilmington, Delaware, including a major station, an operations center (recently moved to Wilmington) and repair shops. You may or may not be aware that Wilmington's sewer system discharges untreated sewage into the Brandywine and Christina Rivers through 38 "Combined Sewer Overflows," polluting the water and creating a heath hazard in waters used for recreation. These overflows dump primarily during rainy weather. Legislation setting a deadline of Jan 1, 2008, for the elimination of Combined Sewer Overflows was introduced into the Delaware General Assembly this year. We are contacting major employers in Wilmington to ask them to do their share to correct this problem by supporting cleanup legislation, and, meanwhile, by taking measures to minimize their own contributions to water pollution. We have these suggestions for AMTRAK: (1) ask employees and customers to "hold it" during rain,We would like to meet with you to discuss this situation. Yours very truly, Alan J. Muller
