What’s really happening with Delaware?

I’ve been trying to write this for weeks.  It’s hard–too personal and my stomach knots up thinking about these things.  So I will try a different approach and include more that is personal.

Would it surprise you to know that people in Minnesota live, on average, 2.7 years longer than people in Delaware?  Why might this be? Continue reading

Here we go again: Delaware City Refinery and a bad Governor

I’ve written about the Delaware City Refinery so many times, over so many years, that it’s hard to believe more is needed.  It’s tiresome to think about.  It never ends.  Yet here we go again. (pic:  The Delaware City Refinery in action, Delaware City Environmental Coalition; via Amy Roe)

The Refinery has operated under a number of owners beginning with Tidewater Oil.  It started up in 1956 or 1957, before the time of meaningful environmental regulation and took out a national ad in Readers Digest promising “Country sweet air for our neighbors.” Continue reading

Code Orange bad air in Delaware happening now.

From the State of Delaware, DNREC:

“Tuesday, December 8th, will be a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day for Delaware!”

“A Code Orange air quality forecast for particulates is a level of pollution that can be unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as young children, the elderly, and those with heart and/or respiratory conditions. Such persons should limit outdoor activities, especially those that require a high level of exertion.”

“Commentary: Time to think about Delaware’s Peterson, Coastal Zone Act”

Published today in the Delaware State News:

DSN Peterson Coastal Zone Act

Delaware’s a mess. The water is rising. We are a major destination for bomb trains. One of the most leaky and dangerous nuke power complexes threatens and pollutes the state and is trying to expand with new reactors. The air and water are polluted. The economy is stagnant and the political system corrupt. The public schools are under attack. The court system is openly dedicated to protecting corporate crime. A tale of woe, to be sure. Rep. Osienski, Sen. McBride step up on bomb trains

Flames erupt from the scene of a crude-oil train derailment Feb. 16 near Timmins, in Ontario, Canada. (Transportation Safety Board of Canada)

Rep. Ed Osienski and Sen. Dave McBride developed a letter to Rep. John Carney asking the US Congress to take meaningful action on oil (“bomb”) trains.  This letter was signed by 30 Delaware state senators and representatives.

Here’s the letter. Continue reading

Delaware’s worst environmental scandal? Unpublic Hearing March 24th.

[Update:  We have since learned that the Hearing Officer has agreed to keep the public comment period open until April 24th, at the request of Delaware Audubon and Delaware Sierra.]

Reject Jack Markell’s latest dirty deal with the Delaware City Refinery.

After 58 years of river/bay destruction, the time for cooling towers is NOW.

On Tuesday, March 24th, at six pm, at Gunning Bedford Middle School, 801 Cox Neck Road (West of Delaware City)  the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is holding one of its mostly bogus “public hearings” on a water permit for the Delaware City Refinery.  The subject is a “draft permit” to allow the refinery to keep polluting the Delaware River and vacuuming the marine life out of it.  The permit also has implications for air quality because shortages of cooling water have lead to some of the largest “upsets” at the refinery. Tuesday: Breathe with care in Delaware …..(etc)

Bad Air

Tuesday August 5, 2014 is an official Code Orange “air quality action day” in Delaware.  The DNREC says: “A Code Orange air quality forecast for ozone is a level of pollution that can be unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as young children, the elderly, and those with heart and/or respiratory conditions. Such persons should limit outdoor activities, especially those that require a high level of exertion.”

Details on oil trains running through Minnesota on their way to Delaware and other places

The linked reports were provided to the State of Minnesota pursuant to an order from the US Department of Transportation.   The state was very reluctant to release the info but eventually did under pressure.  Newspaper articleMinnesota crossed by 50 oil trains a week.”

Notice how VERY anxious the railroads seem to prevent this information from being released to the public. Continue reading

Object to Censorship at “Delaware City Day”

Delaware City, whatever it’s other charms, has been, pathetically, a “company town.”  The Company being whatever is the current owner of the Delaware City Refinery.  The Refinery has had perhaps a half-dozen owners since opening in 1957, none seeming nastier or more aggressive that the present PBF Energy. Gov.Jack Markell’s dirty deals produce dirty air for Delaware

Today, Thursday, May 30, 2013, is a Code Orange bad air day for ozone and a Code Yellow bad air day for “fine particles” (PM2.5).

Friday and perhaps Saturday are also expected to be Code Orange for ozone.

Wednesday, May 29th, was Code Yellow for both ozone and particles.

Tuesday, May 28th, was Code Yellow for particles.

So, obviously, Delaware is well into a summer bad air season. Continue reading
