the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark (UUFN) hosts Markell and O’Mara

The Newark UU’s are having a series called Green Matters Forum Series Wednesdays, February 3, 10, 17, 24, and March 3, 2010, from 7 to 9 pm.

Some more details, supposedly, are here.

The first one, Feb. 3, featured Governor Jack Markell and Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Collin O’Mara.

I wasn’t there, and dislike UUFN events because, apparently as a matter of policy, members of the audience aren’t allowed to ask questions for themselves.  They can only hand in questions on cards and “safe” questions are selected from those by those in charge.  This is a format also used by the Delaware Humanities Forum and the League of Women Voters.  To me it signifies disrespect for the audience.  Why not trust people to speak for themselves?  But, then, many Delaware orgs, whatever their intentions, are really just helping run the plantation.  Probably many politicians prefer a format that protects them from challenges.  Pathetic….

In any event, our sources said that challenging questions weren’t asked.  Greg Shute is the Minister.

This comment by blogger Nancy Willing appeared on a blog about Christina School District:

” … Almost as funny as watching Jack Markell wince the other night when his Sec. DNREC O’Mara was speaking to the Green Matters Forum crowd in Newark and he let it slip that clean coal is a myth, pure fabrication…

yeah, the DEMs on high are pretending that clean coal and nuke power are smart alternative energy sources to pour money into along with the ACTUAL green energy facilities like wind, solar, water-hydro, geothermal.

Markell almost gasped out loud but ended up inhibiting his disgust with O’Mara with a mere grunt and head shake.

The truth is that there is no such animal as clean coal technology nor safe and clean nuke power. I don’t disagree with spending money to continue to reseach such technologies but I don’t agree with moving forward with facilities in these areas until we have truly figured out how and if we can do it safely and cleanly.”

Nancy Willing got this one right.
